Lived with Talon, Valley Spirit
Asia (and her litter mates Buku, Oreo, and Batman) was born in the spring of 2009 en route to Mission: Wolf. The pups and their mother, Valley Spirit, arrived at the refuge with a male wolf-dog named Talon who had been confiscated from the same property. Talon was placed in the vet building, while Valley and the pups were taken to an enclosure. When we opened the kennel, Valley almost immediately began to explore her new home, and within a few minutes discovered an old den. She cleaned out the den and, one by one, carried her pups down to it. For the next few weeks, staff did not see any of the pups, though Valley was starting to become very friendly.
When the pups finally did emerge, the staff were shocked to see what looked to be four Labrador puppies stumble out of the den. We had assumed that Talon, who looks very wolf-like, was the pups’ father, but have now received information that the father was actually a pit bull. Asia is the only female of the litter, and as the pups grew, she proved to be the most social of her siblings. She lived in our socialization pen with another rescue named Minigan, for about a year.
Though Asia looked very much like a dog, her behavior proved to be more wolf-like, and she became very protective over the fridge in the staff building, showing us that she would not make a good companion for people. We moved Asia back in with Valley and Talon, and the three lived as a very happy family. In 2019, Talon was moved up to an enclosure near the staff so they could keep an eye on him as he dealt with health issues. Asia and Valley continued to enjoy each other’s company until Valley passed away in the summer of 2020. Asia was battling osteosarcoma, and was helped to pass peacefully in August of 2020 when it became clear that the cancer was untreatable and becoming painful. Asia is missed for her spunky personality and her incredible loyalty to her mother.
