Moondancer’s Story
Moondancer came to the refuge from New Jersey with Lakota. For two years Lakota and Moondancer had not mated, but in the third year, they mated in secret despite the efforts of the staff to prevent a litter. Lakota was found one morning guarding a pile of seven squirmy pups. Due to Lakota’s fear of people, the pups were taken away at three days old so they would be better able to deal with people. Two of the pups, Ghostdancer and Dancing Bear, remained at the refuge for the rest of their lives.
