Saurya

Female Gray Wolf

Born on April 1, 2017 in Indiana
Arrived at Mission: Wolf on June 4, 2017

Did you know? It takes $3,000 a year just to feed and care for one of the wolves. By giving $5 or more a month, you can take Saurya to dinner by becoming a Wolf Caretaker.

Saurya’s Story

Fondly referred to as our “April Fool’s Baby,” Saurya (Shuh-rye-uh) was born at the Washington Park Zoo in Indiana, when an accidental litter of puppies required the facility to find a suitable home. Our staff drove halfway across the country to Lincoln, NE, to pick up little Saurya along with her sister Chakra, who now resides at the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center in Divide, CO.

Saurya, a pure wolf, was timid and unsure about meeting people upon her arrival to the sanctuary. But after a month of acclimating to life in the mountains, she began to cautiously investigate her surroundings. Despite her shyness, Saurya has very much displayed her wild side, as she enjoyed climbing on the roof of the old cabin in the Ambassador enclosure to survey her domain.

As she grew, Saurya’s behavior became much more wolfy, so we decided that it would be best for her to move out of the Ambassador pack and into an enclosure with Rosie and Tiger, the 4-year-old Gray wolf siblings. She proved to be too energetic for the siblings and was given her own space. She was then paired with a young wolf-dog, Flash. They were two reticent animals who really helped pull each other out of their shells. They both began to become interested in people and greet staff and visitors alike. However, after a year their relationship began to sour and and eventually they had to be separated. After another stint by herself she was paired with a wolf-dog, Marty, in April 2022. The two lived together for a year and were a fiery couple, alternately squabbling and romping about. In early 2023 the two got into a fight that escalated past their previous ones and were separated. Saurya now enjoys her own space.
