Did you know? It takes $3,000 a year just to feed and care for one of our wolves. By giving $5 or more a month, you can take a wolf to dinner by becoming a Wolf Caretaker.

Valley Spirit’s Story

Valley Spirit (known as Mama) and another wolf-dog named Talon were confiscated from their owner by animal control, and taken to a local shelter. Since they were both thought to be part wild animal, the shelter could not adopt out either of them. Mission: Wolf was contacted, and we agreed to take the two animals. With the help of the Dog Whisperer television show, we were able to gain the funds and means to transport the animals to the refuge. Two days before she was to arrive, Mama gave birth to four pups: Buku, Batman, Oreo, and Asia. The six arrived at the refuge in the spring of 2009.

Staff carried the crate containing Mama and the pups down to a wooded enclosure. When we opened the crate door, Mama immediately began investigating her new home. Upon finding an old den she cleaned it out and one by one carried her pups down to it. Mama, Talon, and the pups all lived together until the pups matured and were separated into their own packs.

Mama, Talon and Asia lived together in the lower half of the sanctuary, far away from humans. Two of her other pups, Buku and Oreo, lived in a neighboring enclosure, and all of them were often heard barking and howling to each other, especially if a critter happens to run by. Mama passed away peacefully in the summer of 2020.
